One of the most beloved of American dishes is, undoubtably, Sloppy Joes. The gooey pile of goodness has been a staple of childhood (and, if we’re being honest, adulthood) for around a century at this point. There’s one thing that’s always bothered me though, why is it called that?

I mean the “sloppy” part makes sense, but the “Joe?” Well… that has never made much sense to me. The answer to this quandry is, as is so often the case, a bit unclear.

Sloppy Joes History – 1917

There’s lots of theories regarding the origin of the sandwich and the earliest of them goes all the way back to sometime between 1917 and 1919. Most interesting about this theory is that not only does it go back more than 100 years, it also definitively leaves the US. The story goes that Jose Abeal y Otero made a sandwich of ground beef stewed in tomatoes at his bar in Havana, Cuba.

The theory continues that the dish was likely influenced or inspired by ropa vieja, a Cuban dish with similar construction. Ropa vieja is made with shredded beef, as opposed to ground, and tomatoes, which makes the comparison to sloppy joes rather obvious. Now, it would be rather criminal to call ropa vieja a dish of meat and tomatoes, so let me be clear that it’s also typically made with a white wine or sherry, a delicious blend of pimentos and olives, various herbs (like cilantro and bay leaves), and often peppers, commonly of the bell variety.

At some point, the bar was apparently renamed to “Sloppy Joes”, not for his signature sandwich, but because that was the nickname bestowed upon Jose by English speaking regulars. The story goes that the “Joe” portion comes from a sort of anglicization of the name Jose and the “sloppy” portion was simply a reflection of the way he worked. I suppose that neatly explains the name, but what brought the sandwich from Havana to the States? This is where the theory takes a very more unexpected turn. Ernest Hemmingway.

Even the Sloppy Joe’s Bar’s location is part of the history. Capt. Tony’s claims to be the original location of the Silver Slipper bar.

Apparently, Hemmingway was a common presence at the Sloppy Joes bar in Havana, as he was at many bars. The famed author lived in Key West at the time and also frequented the Silver Slipper, a bar owned by Joe Russell. This theory states that Hemmingway convinced Russell to rename the bar to Sloppy Joe’s, just like the bar in Havana. The new Sloppy Joe’s also served a sandwich that was inspired by the Cuban counterpart. However, in Key West, the dish was Americanized to what we recognize today as Sloppy Joe. In fact, the restaurant still exists and they still serve the sandwich.

Other Contenders in Sloppy Joes History

Although the links to Havana and Hemmingway are certainly compelling, they are not the only theory that exists. Some research has pointed to Sioux City, Iowa and a cook named Joe as the originator of the dish. There’s also the Town Hall Deli in New Jersy that claims they created a sandwich of messy sliced ham and turkey with Russian dressing. That sandwich was also named Sloppy Joe, supposedly copied from the Havana bar just like the situation in Key West, but without any Hemmingways involved.

Given the fact that I was able to dedicate quite a space to the story of a Havana bar and a famous author, one might think that the origin is definitive. However, that’s not exactly how history works. A compelling story doesn’t necessarily mean that’s what happened. Rather, it’s often the case that history isn’t so neatly tied up in a fairly quick and quirky tale but involves more boring and iterative steps.

Still, there is a great deal of evidence that the chain of events that lead a sandwich from Havana, Cuba to Key West, Florida, via a Nobel Laureate is at least somewhat accurate. Although we may not ever be able to say that the story is definitely true, it’s certainly compelling, and tasty. Perhaps most fun, though, you can visit here and indulge in the history yourself.

You might find it hard to believe, given my work, that I’d never been to New York City. Don’t worry, I’ve corrected this oversight and along the way I spent half a day in one of the most unique buildings I’ve ever set foot in, The Morgan Library. In a city of remarkable buildings, this one, along with the myriad artifacts contained within, left me speechless.

Astonishing History

Like many museums, The Morgan Library is a former residence, named after its owner, Mr. Morgan. Nestled within the heart of Manhattan, at 225 Madison Avenue, the structure is quintessential New York. However, the collection housed inside, which Mr. Morgan started amassing more than 130 years ago, has relics from all over the world.

Nichole standing in front of the Morgan Library’s Sol Le Witt – Wall Drawing 552D.

He purchased hundreds of illuminated manuscripts, historical documents, and rare book printings. There are also prints and drawings from old masters and revolutionaries alike. The building itself is even considered to be a masterpiece of architecture and design. Completed in 1906, it’s a breathtaking juxtaposition of the American Age of Elegance with the style of the Italian Renaissance.

Surprising Connections

There are enough treasures housed in the walls of this institution to write a lengthy treatise on, so I will only highlight some of the most notable pieces.

The Morgan Library holds this Gutenberg Bible.

Gutenberg Bibles: Mr. Morgan’s collection of religious works included three Gutenberg Bibles. These Bibles are notable for being the first major book printed with mass produced, metal, moveable type. Production of Gutenberg bibles dates to the 1450s and there are only 49 remaining in the world.

Portrait of a Man with a Pink: Painted by the Flemmish master Hans Memling in the 1480s, it is likely a commemoration of wedding and possibly one half of a pair, though that is conjecture.

The First Italian Bible: For centuries, The Bible was only available in Latin, so the earliest volumes available in other languages are always notable. Bibles written in Italian are especially notable given the influence of the Vatican in Rome. The Morgan Library has one of only six remaining original copies of the first Italian Bibles.

Numerous seals, tablets, and papyri dating back more than 4000 years.

Hidden Gem and Public Service

Were The Morgan Library placed in nearly any other city than New York, it would be a landmark boasted about in every discussion of the town. However, it is in New York and therefore has quite some competition for recognition. NYC is, after all, rather spoiled for choice in museums, art collections, and exhibits. That means that this smaller library often slips under the radar of many people, including myself.

It is also a standout for the fact that it is a functional library. Granted, to request an object for loan from the library one must generally have an academic purpose for it. The amazing objects housed inside are there to be studied and loaned out and it was always intended to be that, which is part of what strikes me as so remarkable.

A portrait of the man himself, Mr. John Pierpont Morgan.

To this point, I’ve been careful to say Mr. Morgan because I was most fascinated by the revelation that this Morgan was John Pierpont Morgan – one J.P. Morgan. Yes, that one. As in J.P. Morgan Chase Bank. He collected these works in his life for the explicit purpose of creating a library, not just for him, but for the public. His life and legacy is far from black and white, but making this collection available for the public to study was undoubtably born from a philanthropic desire.

The next time you find yourself in New York, your really must spend time in The Morgan Library. It will only take a few hours to visit, as I said, this isn’t a large place, but it may be one of the most memorable things you do.

Updated October 2024

Condé Nast Traveler named Chicago the best American big city to visit. Not only did they rave about Chicago, but they also hailed it as one of the ultimate holiday season destinations – and we’re wholeheartedly on board with that! So, without further ado, here’s our guide to Christmas in Chicago!

Bursting with boundless energy, a Chicago holiday season is unlike any other. Here are some of our cherished Chicago holiday events and traditions! With its vast array of top-notch restaurants and bars, spectacular museums, shopping havens, and exhilarating events, your Christmas in Chicago will surely help you make great memories. Thanksgiving in Chicago is fabulous too!

The European Christmas Market in Chicago

Chicago has a European-style Christmas market! We think the Christmas market is a must visit for any Chicago visitor. Officially called Christkindlmarkt, the original is on Daly Plaza, although two other locations have been added as well. Modeled after the European Christmas markets, it has vendors from Germany. Looking for Krampus items? You will find them here!

And not only can you buy great holiday gifts and ornaments, but it’s also a fun place for a drink or a snack. You will find candies, cookies, pretzels, potato pancakes, sausages, and more. You must try the gluhwein, a mulled wine you can get in an adorable souvenir mug.

Once you Have enjoyed the Market, it’s only a couple of blocks to Macy’s where you can check out the famous holiday tradition, the Macy’s holiday window displays.

Moose

Chicago Christmas Shows

Of course, you can see A Christmas Carol and the Nutcracker, but there is also Christmas with C.S. Lewis and plenty of other holiday shows.

And if you have been wanting to see Hamilton, it is back through January 28.

If the symphony is more your speed, make sure to check out the perennial favorite at the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

Christmas Parades

Chicago has terrific parades. We love the Magnificent Mile Lights Festival on November 23th, because they light the magical lights on Michigan Avenue as the parade proceeds south; but the Thanksgiving Day parade is awesome too.

Always on the first Sunday in December, make sure you don’t miss the Chicagoland Toys for Tots Motorcycle Parade, which helps do fundraising for the Toys for Tots charity which helps bring joy into the lives of underprivileged children across the country. Motorcyclists are encouraged to join, with the entry fee just being an unwrapped toy donation.

Less a parade, but no less spectacular, check out the Morton Arboretum’s Illumination display.

New Year’s Eve

Finally, New Year’s Eve always brings great fireworks off Navy Pier. These fireworks can be enjoyed by anyone with a clear view of the pier, but you can get up close and personal on the pier itself.

If you’re the party type, a lot of Chicago hotels hold New Year’s parties, but perhaps the biggest, most famous of them is the one held at The Drake Hotel, just off Michigan Avenue.

Chicago’s many bars and restaurants also will be hosting their own parties. There are so many choices, you’ll have a hard time just choosing one!

European Christmas markets can be found throughout northern Europe in Germany, Austria, France, Norway, Italy, Belgium, Scandinavia, the Netherlands, and the even the United Kingdom. Generally, they run from mid-November to a few days before Christmas. However, a few will run until New Year’s. We use this helpful annual guide to make sure the ones we want to visit are open when we go.

Our favorite country for European Christmas markets is Germany. After all, Germany is the country that developed most of the traditions that Americans follow for celebrating Christmas.

Moose

Fairy Tale Dioramas In Lubeck Germany

What Will You Find at a Christmas Market?

Every market has a distinct vibe. Some are very child-oriented with carnival rides for the kids. Others are high-end shopping extravaganzas. There are medieval themed Christmas markets, which are great fun. We saw one in Lubeck that featured adorable fairy tale dioramas.

In many traditional markets, especially in smaller towns, there will be at least one vendor selling household goods. Of course, most will sell beautiful ornaments for your Christmas tree. And it is a rare German Christmas market where you don’t see vendors selling giant Gingerbread necklaces with sayings in frosting like “Princess” or “I love you.”

You’ll see stands like this everywhere

Christmas Market Food and Drink

There will be food, almost always with vendors roasting sausages and wurst. Usually, there will be fried fish and vegetarian options. Try a flammkuchen, a flatbread usually topped with cheese, onions, and ham. Of course, you can get them topped with a variety of other items. By the way, you will often see a German favorite, currywurst. We are not fans.

You will find baked goods, including German pretzels, usually called bretzels.

Most markets will have stollen, gingerbread, and marzipan. Oddly, you will probably not find peppermint candy canes. But don’t fret, there are so many other treats.

Be aware the some of the treats are regional in nature, so you may not find everything we mention here at every market.

One of our favorites is a delightful sugar dough treat called Baumstriezel, also known as Chimney Cake. Picture this– spiraling wisps of yeasted dough, twirled lovingly around a cylindrical spit, and baked till it hits that golden brown sweet spot. You end up with a confection that’s caramelized just right on the outside and fluffily soft on the inside! Don’t blame us if you’re left wanting more!

The Divine Baumstreizel

And you MUST try the ubiquitous warm gluhwein, which is mulled wine. You can add a shot of rum or other liquors to make it even better. While there will be many outdoor stands, some will have a big indoor tent or temporary building where you can sit and warm up. The significant consumption of gluhwein appears to be the point of many Christmas markets. It does warm your tummy!

What’s The Best Way to Visit Christmas Markets?

We think the very best way is to take a special river cruise with a Christmas market itinerary. Imagine waking up each morning in a new town with new markets to explore! No packing and unpacking as your hotel is your transportation.

We love AMAWaterways which offers many Christmas market cruises. If you have never taken an AMAWaterways river cruise, you can read about our experiences here.

Popular Viking cruises also offers many Christmas Market itineraries.

Christmas Markets to Consider

Trier, Koblenz, and Mainz are particularly famous and are large markets. We loved the several markets in the charming Lubeck in northern Germany. Berlin has MANY markets to choose from and we have gone to most of them! In fact, if you tire of Berlin’s, Potsdam and Dresden are short train rides away so you can visit more. We also enjoyed markets in Erfurt and Weimar.

Strasbourg is a charming French town along the Rhine featured on many river cruises. It is a picture-perfect town for a Christmas market visit. And of course, there is the famous Romantic Road with lovely markets.

We hope you love these best Christmas markets in Europe as much as we do.

Everyone knows the Louvre Museum in Paris is where you can see the Mona Lisa, and you should. But prepare yourself–it will be very crowded and the painting is much smaller than you imagine. This is our guide to viewing the Mona Lisa and what to see that is not the Mona Lisa.

Prepare yourself for seeing the Mona Lisa. It will be crowded, and everyone will be trying to snap photos. Worse yet, people want selfies. We took this photo on our last visit. If you want to get up close, move forward slowly and gently as people depart. Patience is a virtue.

Are you at the Louvre and are tired of glimpsing the Mona Lisa from behind hundreds of people? Most of the other works will not be so crowded! Here are some of the most famous, important, and interesting pieces in the Louvre. We especially loved the Vermeers.

I was a resident of Washington DC for many years and I utterly adore the distinctive vibe of this city. Let me share my ideas that will make visiting Washington DC memorable. Kids and adults will be entertained and enraptured in Washington DC. Plus, many of the most popular places to visit are free! So today I share some of the best places to visit in Washington D.C., including a few of my personal favorites.

The Reflecting Pool and Lincoln Memorial, National Mall

Washington D.C. For Children

Of course, a Washington DC visit is perfect for families. All of the Smithsonian Museums and the Zoo are free! For an engaging, informative and fun experience for the little ones, the Museum of Natural History and the National Air and Space Museum should be at the top of your list. These venues are exceptionally kid-friendly, complete with interactive exhibits that invite youngsters and adults alike to partake in the joy of discovery. I’ll admit that I have been known wait in line to play with the interactive exhibits.

The best places to visit in Washington D.C. for children include the National Zoo and the Natural History Museum.

The National Zoo is free! Visit the Smithsonian’s National Zoo which is a Metro ride to Woodley Park from the National Mall. Sadly, the pandas are no longer there, but that does not mean that the National Zoo is not a terrific family visit. The kids will enjoy the squirt zone, the carousel, the Me and Bee playground, and a virtual reality safari. Adults will enjoy the Zoo as well. I’ve spent many afternoons walking the grounds. Even though the zoo is free you do need entry passes. You can easily get these passes on the Zoo’s website.

The White House

Not to Miss on Your Washington DC Visit

Some of the best places to visit in Washington DC are the most famous.

The White House

No visit to Washington DC is complete without viewing the White House. If you want the inside tour, you must plan in advance as tickets are extremely limited.

If you want a tour, submit White House tour requests through your Member of Congress. These self-guided tours are generally available Tuesday through Saturday (excluding federal holidays or unless otherwise noted). Tours are scheduled on a first come, first served basis. You can make requests up to three months before and no less than 21 days in advance. Submit your request as early as possible as a limited number of spaces are available. e in their request. The White House tour is free of charge. Please note that White House tours may be subject to last minute cancellation.

The U.S. Capitol

One of the most important places to visit in Washington DC, the US Capitol opens its doors to welcome visitors. I strongly suggest booking a private tour to gain easy entry and learn more about the behind the scenes at the U.S. Capitol. Summers can be steamy in Washington DC and it is no fun waiting at the entrance.

Many Many Museums

Get ready to step into the vibrant world of Washington D.C’s iconic museums! The Museum of Natural History claims to be the world’s most popular natural history museum, and for good reason. Remember, it is also the home of the famous Hope Diamond. From the engrossing tales at the Museum of American History to the rich cultural tapestry of the Museum of the American Indian, and the powerful narratives unfolded in the Museum of African American History – there’s a treasure trove of wonder awaiting you in every corner! The museums are definitely the best places to visit in Washington D.C.

Important Tip: The Museum of African American History requires a pass. Because these passes go quickly, book them as soon as you can.

Moose

The National Museum of African-American History

Ford Theater

The Lincoln Theater is nearby and you can visit with a Lincoln Assassination Walking tour. Make sure you book a tour in advance. Your tour guide will make you feel as if you were there the night Lincoln was assassinated. For this reason, the theater is on our list of “must do’s” when we have company.

Arlington Cemetery

I have been to Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia many times, which is an easy Metro ride from Alexandria. I consider it one of the most important places to visit in Washington DC.The last time I was there I booked an Arlington National Cemetery Tour for myself and my family. As a result, I learned things about the history of the grounds and stopped at the graves of many famous people that I would not have found on my own. The guide will make sure that you see the Changing of the Guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Make sure you wear good walking shoes for this tour.

More

Aside from exploring the political and historic landmarks, there are numerous additional activities to indulge in while you’re visiting Washington DC. For instance, you must not miss the world-class performances and immersive tours the Kennedy Center offers. Furthermore, you can enrich your cultural appreciation by visiting our abundant free art galleries and museums, each showcasing unique exhibits and collections. My favorite is the National Museum of Art where you will find classical as well as modern art.

Don’t Forget to Eat on Your Washington DC Visit

Remember, museums here aren’t just about artifacts; they’re culinary destinations too! Take the Sweet Home Café nestled within the beautiful National Museum of African American History, for example. This gem is not just highly recommended, but sparkling with rave reviews from top food critics. My personal favorite is Mitsitam at the Museum of the American Indian where I can get both fry bread and grilled salmon. All of the museums will have cafes and places to grab a quick bite.

And that’s not all! On your Washington DC visit venture north of the mall and you’ll be spoiled by a parade of tantalizing food trucks and a variety of restaurants waiting to tease your taste buds. Accordingly, it will be a feast for the senses, indeed! We can provide recommendations!

Practical Advice for Visiting Washinton D.C.

It’s easy visiting Washington DC with the swift and efficient Metro system. I’ve rarely driven into Washington DC, opting to use the Metro to get around to all the places to visit in Washington DC.

When visiting Washington D.C. for a tour of the iconic monuments, it’s essential to gear up in comfortable footwear, considering the considerable amount of walking involved. I have walked up to 5 miles, even after leaving out a few monuments. Try an evening stroll around the monuments, as these hours offer a less crowded experience, allowing you to immerse fully in their historical grandeur. I love booking a moonlight tour of the monuments when family visits.

Fly into Reagan National Airport (DCA) and book your stay in Alexandria, Virginia. This can be both a time and cost-efficient option for travelers. Many hotels in Alexandria offer the convenience of shuttle services to and from the airport.

When I can, I spend a night in Alexandria. The town is steeped in rich history and boasts an array of shopping venues and diverse dining options. Additionally, there is a Metro Station at the West end of Alexandria. This connects you seamlessly to the much-loved Washington D.C. National Mall and many of the Smithsonian Museums. It makes visiting Washington DC a breeze. I have spent weekends in Alexandria with family. We have spent the day in DC or at Arlington National Cemetary and have had a wonderful dinner and evening in Alexandria.

Whether you are traveling to Seattle, or starting your Alaskan cruise from there, it’s worth it to take some time to truly enjoy the city. You’ll get the city’s best weather and at the height of summer, you will have over 16 hours of daylight. The sun will rise before 6 a.m. and set after 9 p.m. If you have the energy, you can pack a lot in one day. Summer is certainly the best time to visit Seattle Washington.

I have lived there and still visit. I know the city well and the best time of year to visit Seattle is definitely summer.

If you are looking to truly experience the city, you should definitely stay downtown, as you don’t have to wander far to get to the Seattle Art Museum, Seattle Aquarium, and many restaurants, diners and bars.

Pike Place

Pike Place Market

Start your Summer in Seattle in the Pike Place Market area where there are so many things to do.

It’s fantastic to stay in a hotel near Pike Place Market. It is central to many activities. We love to walk or take a short light rail ride to many locations across Seattle.

Begin your morning at one of the many cafés for a bite and coffee. Starbucks’ original store opens at 6 a.m. and closes at 8 p.m. Get there early or wait until later in the day if you want to visit. By 9 a.m., the line will get long and will stay that way until mid-afternoon.

Sample some smoked salmon, Chucker Cherries, dried fruits and baked goods. Or visit the north end of the market for local treasures at the artisan stands and eat at one of the many restaurants in the market. Don’t forget the shops and restaurants in Post Alley. Kell’s and the Pink Door are some of my favorites. Finally, add your contribution to the gum wall (if you can find it).

Hint: Take a morning tasting tour of the Market. I was able to sample foods from several vendors before the market got crowded. There are other food tours late in the day for those night owls.

Moose

The Space Needle is a Seattle Icon

Checking Out the Seattle Center

Take a short light rail ride or walk to the Seattle Center. It is a fantastic place to spend the whole day with a multitude of activities. Even though summer is the best time of year to visit Seattle Washington, it will sometimes rain. That’s when you can visit the Seattle Center where there are many things to do indoors.

The Museum of Pop Culture showcases memorable moments in TV, rock and roll, and science fiction through engaging and interactive exhibits.

There are glass blowing demonstrations throughout the day. Note: This is not the place to take children who like to run. But there are many other places for active little ones.

Activities for children

Seattle Science Center is a children’s paradise with hands on exhibits and places to run

Artists at Play Plaza and Playground

South Fountain Lawn is a large fountain with shooting sprays of water for children to splash and run through.

The Armory has a food court with many options.

Hint: I would skip the Space Needle unless it is truly on your list of must-do’s. It is very expensive and very crowded. You can get a better view at the Sky View Observatory.

Outdoor Activities Make Summer the Best Time to Visit Seattle

For your Summer in Seattle, you can head to the piers on Puget Sound to catch an Argosy Cruise through the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks or a one-hour Harbor Cruise where you will see the Seattle Skyline and the mountain ranges that surround the city. A Seattle CityPass will include the cruise, the Chihuly Exhibit, the Space Needle, and more.

For those of us who like history and ghost stories, make sure you do one of the Underground Tours in Pioneer Square. Learn the true story of Skid Row and the unsavory characters who lived there.

The Woodland Park Zoo is an easy Uber/Lyft ride from your hotel. The zoo has many tree-lined paths and is a great place to escape the sun. This is another great place to take the kids for an afternoon. There are plenty of paths to run around on.

Green Lake is nearby and another wonderful place to enjoy the outdoors. You can rent pedal boats, row boats, kayaks and even water bikes. There is also a café for a snack after your water activities.

The Skyline Observatory on the 73th floor of the Columbia Center provides fantastic views of the city and mountains. On a clear day you might be able to see Mount Baker to the north as well as Mt. Rainier to the Southeast.

Nearby Tours

There are amazing places to visit outside Seattle. Want to see what Mount St. Helen’s looks like now? It’s a National Monument. Mt.
Beginner photography can be a real steep learning curve.

You’re setting out on a trip you’ve wanted to take for years, and you want to make sure that you capture every moment! An admirable goal, but one that can be hard to accomplish. I’ve been working on my skill behind the camera for more than a decade now and here are my best beginner travel photography tips.

The most important thing in photography is just keep looking for that perfect moment. Doesn’t Nichole look perfect here!

Choose The Right Camera

If you’re a typical person who just wants to take some nice pictures to remember your trip or share with friends, my honest advice is just use your cell phone. To be clear, the lenses in your phone aren’t better than those of a dedicated camera. However, the digital processing software in your phone IS amazing and it’s getting better with every generation.

Two of the author’s cameras. One she’s using now and the one she started with.

But, since you’re reading this, you’re probably interested in travel photography as a hobby or thinking about picking it up as one and you want to know what camera to get. Well, don’t break the bank with your purchase, but get a decent camera to start with.

Get a camera with a swapable lens system, nothing with a permanent lens, and don’t spend too much, then you’re on the right track. Your price range should be around $500-$800.

Get Out Of The Way

The most insensitive and annoying thing you can do as a travel photographer is be in the way of everyone else’s experiences. I don’t mean, be in the way of everyone else’s picture, I mean experience.

If you’ve ever been to a tourist attraction, like the Grand Canyon, then you’ve likely experienced the “influencers” or the pushy photo tourists. These people barge their way through everyone and take up the entire space, taking way too many pictures for way too long. Blocking the views and beautiful panoramas, ruinging it for everyone. Don’t be these people.

Be polite and courteous, get your picture quickly (no more than a minute or two if it’s a busy area), and move on. It’s that simple. If you’ve got a group photo you want to take, do it off to the side, away from the crowd.

Only Take Needed Gear

Beginner photography often presents you with tons of optional gear. You might buy an $800 camera set up, but a salesperson can easily convince you to tack on another $300 in extra gear if you’re not careful. Before you get taken in by a bunch of shiny new things, keep these things in mind.

The key for any traveler is to not overpack. Cameras and their gear are heavy. At a scheduled photo shoot, professional photographers may bring hundreds of lbs. of gear with them. You are not going to a photo shoot, you are walking down streets, meandering through a port, or hiking a trail somewhere.

With travel photography, consider how much you’re walking or hiking and the type of places you’ll be visiting. You don’t want to pack too much, then be carrying around a backpack full of unneeded gear all day. Here’s a couple items that you can often leave at your hotel or in your cruise cabin.

The tripod. It takes time to properly set up a tripod. You have to make sure that it’s secure and stable, and get the timer or remote trigger set up, and they’re awkwardand bulky to carry around. Unless you have something specific planned for it, it’s just not worth lugging the tripod around.

Extra Lights. These can be static lights or flashes and most of the time you just don’t need them. A lot of places, like museums or other historic sites, won’t let you use them and staff freak out if they even see one. Save yourself the hassle and leave them at home. And remember to turn your flash off if there’s one built into your camera.

Beware Thieves

Before you step out with your nice camera, remember, some people will want to steal it. We’ve all heard about thieves picking your pocket for your iPhone, well camera theft can be even more brazen and costly. As a beginner photographer, pay extra attention to this bit of advice.

Afterall, you just spent several hundred dollars on a decent camera, maybe you even sprung for a second lens. So…

Do. Not. Let. It. Out. Of. Your. Sight.

It’s ok to hand someone your camera and have them take a picture but make sure that they are part of your group, maybe a fellow cruise passenger that you’ve become friendly with. The same is true of your tour guide or someone who is very clearly an employee of the place you’re at (they must have the uniform, name tag, and be behind the counter).

Keep your gear close to yourself. Carry your camera in a backpack with locking zippers or one that has the storage pocket on the inside, against your back, and always keep the pack with you. This is exactly what I use: Manfroto Camera Backpack
