One of the most beloved of American dishes is, undoubtably, Sloppy Joes. The gooey pile of goodness has been a staple of childhood (and, if we’re being honest, adulthood) for around a century at this point. There’s one thing that’s always bothered me though, why is it called that?

I mean the “sloppy” part makes sense, but the “Joe?” Well… that has never made much sense to me. The answer to this quandry is, as is so often the case, a bit unclear.

Sloppy Joes History – 1917

There’s lots of theories regarding the origin of the sandwich and the earliest of them goes all the way back to sometime between 1917 and 1919. Most interesting about this theory is that not only does it go back more than 100 years, it also definitively leaves the US. The story goes that Jose Abeal y Otero made a sandwich of ground beef stewed in tomatoes at his bar in Havana, Cuba.

The theory continues that the dish was likely influenced or inspired by ropa vieja, a Cuban dish with similar construction. Ropa vieja is made with shredded beef, as opposed to ground, and tomatoes, which makes the comparison to sloppy joes rather obvious. Now, it would be rather criminal to call ropa vieja a dish of meat and tomatoes, so let me be clear that it’s also typically made with a white wine or sherry, a delicious blend of pimentos and olives, various herbs (like cilantro and bay leaves), and often peppers, commonly of the bell variety.

At some point, the bar was apparently renamed to “Sloppy Joes”, not for his signature sandwich, but because that was the nickname bestowed upon Jose by English speaking regulars. The story goes that the “Joe” portion comes from a sort of anglicization of the name Jose and the “sloppy” portion was simply a reflection of the way he worked. I suppose that neatly explains the name, but what brought the sandwich from Havana to the States? This is where the theory takes a very more unexpected turn. Ernest Hemmingway.

Even the Sloppy Joe’s Bar’s location is part of the history. Capt. Tony’s claims to be the original location of the Silver Slipper bar.

Apparently, Hemmingway was a common presence at the Sloppy Joes bar in Havana, as he was at many bars. The famed author lived in Key West at the time and also frequented the Silver Slipper, a bar owned by Joe Russell. This theory states that Hemmingway convinced Russell to rename the bar to Sloppy Joe’s, just like the bar in Havana. The new Sloppy Joe’s also served a sandwich that was inspired by the Cuban counterpart. However, in Key West, the dish was Americanized to what we recognize today as Sloppy Joe. In fact, the restaurant still exists and they still serve the sandwich.

Other Contenders in Sloppy Joes History

Although the links to Havana and Hemmingway are certainly compelling, they are not the only theory that exists. Some research has pointed to Sioux City, Iowa and a cook named Joe as the originator of the dish. There’s also the Town Hall Deli in New Jersy that claims they created a sandwich of messy sliced ham and turkey with Russian dressing. That sandwich was also named Sloppy Joe, supposedly copied from the Havana bar just like the situation in Key West, but without any Hemmingways involved.

Given the fact that I was able to dedicate quite a space to the story of a Havana bar and a famous author, one might think that the origin is definitive. However, that’s not exactly how history works. A compelling story doesn’t necessarily mean that’s what happened. Rather, it’s often the case that history isn’t so neatly tied up in a fairly quick and quirky tale but involves more boring and iterative steps.

Still, there is a great deal of evidence that the chain of events that lead a sandwich from Havana, Cuba to Key West, Florida, via a Nobel Laureate is at least somewhat accurate. Although we may not ever be able to say that the story is definitely true, it’s certainly compelling, and tasty. Perhaps most fun, though, you can visit here and indulge in the history yourself.

If you enjoy quirky and off-beat experiences, this day trip from Palm Springs California is perfect for you. It’s one of our favorites. Fans of outsider art who find themselves in the area should devote a day travelling to Salvation Mountain.

Along the way, you will explore a lake created by a human-made natural disaster, which became a hip resort, and is now faded and sad.

Finally, your day trip from Palm Springs culminates in the California desert where a single man built his inspired, unique artistic vision.

Plan Your Palm Springs Day Trip

Before you start: This is a long day with few amenities along the way. Please pack lunch, some water, and start with a full tank of gas. And don’t forget a sun hat.

First stop: Dates for Your Day Trip

On the way out of Palm Springs, in Indio, you should stop by the Shields Date Garden for a true mid-century tourist experience. Where else can you see a film called “The Romance and Sex Life of the Date?” For date lovers, there are two important words: Date Shakes. And, while we are on the subject of salvation, you can visit their biblical garden walk.

Moose

Second Stop: The Salton Sea

The Salton Sea is California’s largest body of water. It is an inland salt water sea created by accident. Not only is it fascinating to view, it also serves as a cautionary ecological tale.

As such, it has a very interesting history. The sea was created by an accident when a canal was dredged in 1900. In 1905 the Colorado River flooded and created the Salton Sea.

In the fifties and sixties it became a thriving resort community, but now it is rarely visited except for bird-watchers and those who like to view the old and odd. Back in the day, it was popular destination for Rat Pack types and their followers. You can still see many abandoned resorts, restaurants, and gas stations.

What happened to the Salton Sea? It is a terminal lake, meaning water does not flow out of it. Most of its current water comes from agricultural runoff filled with fertilizers. This causes algal blooms which in turn provoke fish die-offs. In recent years, primarily only tilapia seem to survive, and the shores often littered with their carcasses.

On the plus side, it is a huge habitat for migratory birds. In fact, the Audubon Society has a fascinating post where you can learn more.

The state of California now has a project to restore it.

Prepare yourself for interesting odors coming from the persistent fish die-off. Of course, this is a big reason why it is no longer a popular resort area.

There is an interesting state park visitor center and recreation area.

Fans of modernist architecture should take note that the remains of the Albert Frey designed Salton Sea North Shore Yacht Club are still visible in the town just north of the park. Once filled with the Rat Pack and their hangers-on, who visited the area from their mansions in Palm Springs, it fell into serious disrepair. It was restored to some degree in 2010.

Important tip: The park is the best place on the whole trip for a restroom break.

Third Stop: Bombay Beach

Next on the day trip is Bombay Beach. In the fifties it was deluxe resort area, frequented by the likes of Frank Sinatra and his friends. By the seventies it was all but defunct.

However, Bombay Beach is experiencing a small resurgence as an artist and outsider colony. Many call it a living ghost town as there are people living in rusted trailers and broken down buildings.

It is fascinating drive around the area as many residents have put up their own artistic decorations. Don’t expect tourist amenities. There is no gas station and one bar-restaurant which may or may not be open.

Fourth Stop: Salvation Mountain

The main event is Salvation Mountain. Now run by a trust, it is all the work of one man, Leonard Knight, who spent 28 years building the site. Visit their website for opening information. You will be asked to make a donation to the trust when you visit.

When you arrive, the obvious sight is the mountain itself, a riot of color and religious messages. Several painted vehicles are nearby.

Take some time and meander as there is more to see. For example, there is this interesting grotto.

There is even a Wizard of Oz themed section. Yes-there is a yellow brick road! Well, it’s yellow, anyway.

Fun fact: A scene in the movie Into the Wild was filmed at the site. You can view the clip here.

How Can You Not Visit East Jesus and Slab City?

Just a few miles from Salvation Mountain you can check out East Jesus and Slab City, two outsider art towns if ever there were.

Intriguing off-the-beaten-path is East Jesus, where the centerpiece is an expansive, year-round outdoor art exhibit. This is no ordinary display; you can marvel at a backdrop of shattered televisions, each emblazoned with thought-provoking inscriptions, and a car bizarrely festooned with doll heads, among other eclectic curios. But don’t stop there. The air of eccentricity, and unity is captivating in this unusual enclave. Definitely worth a short visit if you enjoy outsider art or the eccentric.

Homeward Bound to Palm Springs

Heading back to Palm Springs, the nearby town of Niland is your best bet for gas. And, if you have time, try to find the Niland mud pots. We probably should not say so, but we snuck in.

Everyone wants to visit Greece. Greece is well known for its beautiful islands, ancient temples, mythological figures, and great thinkers of the Classical Greece. But after Plato, Aristotle, and Socrates came the Byzantine Empire. During this time, a tremendous amount of art, architecture and culture developed, and much of it can be experienced in Greece today. Exploring this thousand-year historic period can give you a truly unique Greek experience.

Santorini Greece

If you’re just in Greece for the Acropolis, you’re missing out!

What is the Byzantine Empire?

For over a thousand years, Greece was in the heart of the Byzantine Empire, named for Byzantion, which later became Constantinople, which is now Istanbul. This was Greece’s medieval period, and led to the creation of ornate churches, imposing fortresses, and astonishing monasteries. Many of these incredible monasteries can be visited in the stunning and other-worldly Meteora.

Meteroa Greece

Much of the Byzantine Empire’s art was religious in nature. This was the seat of the Eastern Roman Empire. In addition to beautiful icons of the saints, the temples adorned every surface with paintings. Perhaps though, the Byzantine era was most famous for its rich, glittering mosaics.

Experience Byzantine When You Visit Greece

Many parts of Greece have entire museums dedicated to this part of Greek history. Some we recommend for a visit for this unique Greek experience include the Byzantine and Christian Museum in Athens, as well as the Museum of Byzantine Culture in Thessaloniki.

While these are two of the larger museums showcasing Byzantine art, there are many others throughout Greece, especially in the north. If you enjoy museums, art, or history, these make a fantastic and unique Greek experience.

The Architecture of Byzantium

If you enjoy visiting historic sites, like the Acropolis then don’t miss some of the beautiful buildings of Byzantium.

If you are visiting the island of Corfu, make sure to stop by the Angelokastro. It can be quite a climb, but it gives you amazing views of the island, as well as a look at what a real medieval castle looks like.

In Thessaloniki, there are a several churches from the Byzantine empire, which are prime examples of architecture from the time. These churches are absolutely stunning inside, but make sure to be respectful as they are active places of worship.

Finally, also in Thessaloniki, there are the Byzantine Baths, a bathhouse much like the famous Roman baths. This bathhouse was actually functional and in use from 1300 to 1940.

Is there more to explore in Greece than just Athens and the islands? The answer is a resounding YES! There are many incredible Greek mainland destinations in this beautiful country that you need to see. From ancient ruins to stunning landscapes, Greece has something for everyone. Let us help you uncover the hidden mainland gems of this amazing country!

Island life is amazing, but there is so much out there to discover!

Meteora: Our Top Greek Mainland Destination

Otherworldly Meteora is a sight to behold! Awe-inspiring monasteries perch atop dramatic rock spires hundreds of feet above the valley floor. The cliffs, pillars, and valleys rival those of the American Southwest. The monasteries are incredible feats of engineering, and you can visit many of them. They are filled with gorgeous pieces of Byzantine art, icons, and holy relics. Meteora it is a must-see destination for any traveler to mainland Greece.

Meteroa Greece

Meteora is spectacular

While you can do a long day trip from Athens, we highly recommend spending a night. Watch the colors and shadows play over the valley and rock formations as the sun sets and rises. Look down and around as you walk the trails. You will see rare flowers, birds, and animals. The Meteora monasteries are UNESCO World Heritage sites. The Meteora-Antichassia region is a Natura 2000 Ecological Zone, meaning its rare species are protected.

Explore this stunning destination and be sure to take lots of pictures! From Athens, you can choose from many day-long and multi-day trips to Meteora and Delphi.

Delphi: The Heart of the Greek Mainland

Delphi is the perfect stop and a must-see Greek mainland destination on your way from Athens to Meteora. Explore the site of the famous Oracle and the ruins of the 2,500-year-old Temple of Apollo. This was the center of the ancient world! You walk in the footsteps of Alexander the Great and King Midas who were among the multitudes who came to consult the Oracle.

You must also visit the Archeological Museum. There you will see the “Charioteer of Delphi” one of the most famous, important, and best-preserved classic Greek bronze statues. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can climb to the well-preserved theater on the hill above the Temple. It is quite a hike but worth the view.

You might not be able to consult the Oracle, but you will find inspiration at Delphi.

Thessaloniki: The Second Capital of Byzantium

Thessaloniki is a vibrant and culture-filled city in the north of mainland Greece. We especially loved the Byzantine Museum which some consider to be better than the one in Athens. You can take a relaxing stroll along the waterfront. See the famous White Tower with its museum and awe inspiring views from its balcony. Visit the Rotunda, lunch at one of the excellent restaurants, or take a boat tour.

Thessaloniki’s rich history dates back over 3,000 years. You will see relics everywhere from its Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman, and Jewish past. We passed impressive Greek and Roman ruins right along the streets on our walk to the waterfront. You can visit many of them for free. Many of its Byzantine churches and a whole district of the city are included in UNESCO’s World Heritage list. Local tours are, of course, available.

For those who enjoy an active social scene, Thessaloniki was recently ranked as the world’s fifth-best party city by Lonely Planet. It is home to a variety of festivals, special events, and concerts. These range from an International Book Fair to a Street Food Festival, to the ThessFringe Festival, set to rival that of Edinburgh’s famous Fringe Festival. Whether you are looking to explore history, partake in the vibrant nightlife or just relax and take in the sights, Thessaloniki is the perfect destination for you!

Nafpilo: An Awe-Inspiring Destination

Nafplio, or Nafplion, is a stunningly romantic Greek mainland destination located just two hours from Athens. You will experience cozy streets, medieval fortresses, and a small island fortress called the Bourtzi. This town is the perfect place to explore the Peloponnese. From restaurants and cafes to shops and beautiful old buildings, and of course a beach, Nafplio is sure to have something that will make your mainland Greece vacation truly unforgettable.

Getting Around the Greek Mainland

In mainland Greece, you can get around by car, bus, ferry, train or guided tours. However, we do not recommend driving in Athens, as it can be stressful.

A word about taxis in Greece: drivers are fairly well-known to not speak much, if any, English. We experienced this ourselves. When hailing a cab, know what to expect.

Regardless of your Greek mainland destination, our favorite way to travel in Greece is with a private driver. We used a private driver for a day in Athens and another for an overnight trip to Meteroa.

In both cases, the driver took us to all the places we wanted to see, took us to a great local restaurant (not a tourist spot!) and waited as long as we wanted at each attraction. They translated for us when needed. A bonus, we could talk to them about what it was like to live in Greece. We were fortunate that our Athens driver had been one of the guards in the Changing of the Guard ceremony so we could ask questions about what a hot and miserable job it is.

If you have three or more travelers, you can save money and have a much better experience with a private driver.

Finally, since you will almost certainly travel through Athens, be sure to take time to visit one of the best museums in the world, the Acropolis Museum.

We consider the Acropolis Museum in Athens to be one of the world’s best museums. If you visit Athens, you will almost certainly visit the Acropolis. Too many people miss out and don’t also visit the Acropolis Museum. We certainly consider it the best museum in Athens. We also love the Byzantine Museum, but that’s for another post. Not only is the Acropolis Museum filled with incredible art and antiquities, but the design of museum is both beautiful and functional.

The Building Design

Acropolis Museum

Why is it one of the world’s best museums? Because the Acropolis Museum design makes it easy and accessible for the art-loving traveler. Designed by Bernard Tschumi Architects, it maintains, through its highly transparent glass facades, a direct visual connection between its exhibits, the Acropolis and the in-situ monuments. There are panoramic views of the historic surrounding hills and the city. Glass floors let you view the underlying excavations. Instead of a standard building plopped onto the ground, it is an integral part of the location.

Certainly, we’re not alone in our admiration. In 2011 the Acropolis Museum received the AIA Institute Honor Award for Architecture. Make time to see it on your next trip to Athens. To see what we are talking about, take this virtual tour.

How to Visit the Acropolis and the Museum

We recommend that you climb the Acropolis early in the morning when the gates open, usually 8:00 a.m. The crowds tend not to hit until about 10 a.m. Then return down the south side where you arrive very close to the museum. If mobility is a concern, there is new accessible access to the Acropolis itself.

What To See

Before Your Enter

Because the museum is built over an extensive archaeological site, some parts of the floor are glass so you can see the excavations below. Before you enter, you can view one of these areas.

Caryatids of the Erechtheion. Image by Andy Hay

Caryatids of the Erechtheion

Caryatids are female figures that replace columns in architecture and these are the world’s most famous.

These were used to support the roof of the Erechtheion temple on the Acropolis. The Erechtheion was built between 421 and 406 BC, during the Golden Age of Athens. It was dedicated to Athena and Poseidon.

The Caryatids are made of marble and stand about 2.3 meters tall. Each wears a flowing robe, a crown, or a headband. They each have an different, elaborate hairstyle.

Today, five of the Caryatids are in the Acropolis Museum in Athens. The sixth is in the British Museum. To protect the originals, replicas are now in the actual temple .

Parthenon Frieze

The Parthenon Frieze is a sculpted marble band that adorned the exterior of the Parthenon temple. Created in the mid-5th century BC, it depicts a procession of Athenians, gods, and mythical figures in honor of the goddess Athena.

The frieze was 160 meters long and 1 meter high. Originally consisting of 115 individually carved blocks of marble, then fitted together to create the continuous sculpted band. Today, you can see 80 meters of the frieze that remain. No surprise, some sections are in the British Museum.

Planning a Visit?

We suggest devoting several hours as there is much to see and we have given you just a small taste. There are many tours available of the Museum and the Acropolis. We hope you love the Acropolis Museum as much as we do.
