Travel News From Far Far Away Travels
Your summer beach vacation might be a little more complicated this year, thanks a growing problem on Florida’s coast. Reports are coming in that a 5,000-mile-wide mass of seaweed is forming off of Florida’s coastline. It is literally a growing problem on Florida’s coast this summer.
What is the Growing Problem on Florida’s Coast?
The seaweed is called sargassum, and it totally harmless. However, due to global warming and fertilizer dumping, this year is expected to be one of the biggest growths ever recorded.
This is great for fish, less so for tourists.
For the past few years, beach resorts in the Caribbean and Mexico fought off the seaweed. Sometimes, the piles are 5 or 6 feet deep! Resorts spend millions of dollars to clear the beaches.
While usually harmless, the seaweed will rot on land. It can smell awful and attract bugs and bacteria.
News Flash: Scientists now believe it contains flesh-eating bacteria. (June 2, 2023)
The monster blob is approaching Florida and is expected to start hitting the coastline this summer. It might continue all the way to October.
Looking for a Beach Getaway?
While the seaweed is controllable, it’s not very pleasant. If you want to enjoy the ocean, this might be the year to enjoy an ocean cruise. Or, perhaps try an exciting resort somewhere exotic and new.
