Southeast Asia and Japan

Mt Fuji to Ha Long Bay

The regions of Southeast Asia and Japan are wide and varied, with many diverse cultures spread across it. With so many places to go, it is always worth a return visit. There are thousands of ways for you to experience these locations. Visit the bustling cities of Ho Chi Min City or Tokyo, stay in the rural regions, take a river cruise down the many rivers of Southeast Asia, or bike your way across Vietnam.

While it might seem daunting at first for the English-speaking traveler, there are a ton of options for traversing these regions, enjoying the food, and seeing the sights. Whether you travel with a large group, an individual guide, or even on your own, there are a myriad of ways to overcome the language gap.

Vietnam

A lot of American tourists think that Vietnam wouldn’t be very welcoming because of the war. They are often surprised to learn that that couldn’t be further from the truth! Vietnam is a country that is astounding in beauty, culture, food, and wildlife. There are many ways to experience it, from cruising, to trains, to bicycles, to air, and you can’t go wrong with any of them.

While you are in Vietnam, make sure to visit Ha Long Bay, whose stone spires are absolutely astounding, and will take your breath away as you cruise between them. Vietnam is also regularly rated as one of the greatest countries for culinary experiences, so while your there, perhaps take a culinary class or two and learn how to make pho in the traditional way.

Japan

Japan is often one of the top destinations for people traveling to Asia. From the bustling streets of Tokyo, the sunny beaches of Okinawa, the stately temples of Kyoto, or skiing in Hokkaido, there is a huge range of things to do in Japan. Journey through the wide and varied districts in Tokyo, with whole streets of the city devoted to various interests or types of shopping. Or take a trip to Mt. Fuji and try eggs cooked in the volcanic waters that are rising from the Earth’s crust.

If the busy streets of the city aren’t your thing, try visiting a ryokan, a traditional Japanese inn, and relax in one of the large baths. You can also visit Hokkaido, Japan’s northernmost island, and see the massive flower fields that dominate the landscape or go skiing in a fancy Japanese ski resort. If snow isn’t your thing, head to the furthest south part of Japan, the tropical island of Okinawa, the birthplace of karate, and luxuriate on the beaches, or have some of the local delicacies found only there like champuru.

Thailand

Thailand is a fantastic and exciting country to visit, and one of the rising tourist locations for the whole region. In Bangkok, you can take in the city, visit temples, check out the street food, or take a culinary tour. While visiting, why not have a face-to-face encounter with an elephant in one of the elephant sanctuaries that Thailand has become famous for.

Travel down the Mekong River in luxury on an all-inclusive river boat, taking in the culture, the sights, and the sounds as you go. Or if you are more active, bike with a group across the country to experience the countryside in a way you could never do otherwise. For history buffs, consider visiting the river Kwai and the world-famous temples that dot the beautiful landscape.
