Polar Regions

Let's get outside

The Arctic and Antarctic are two of the most inhospitable, but breathtaking places in the world. Increasingly, however, they are becoming more and more locations where people can visit and take in the harsh majesty of some of the coldest places on Earth. Often, these locations are best visited by ship, given the difficulty of reaching them, and several companies have begun offering ways to see these worlds of ice and snow.

The polar regions also offer some more hospitable locations. Whole countries exist within the polar regions, offering civilization, and often exceptionally delicious fish dishes as well. You can get a taste of the stark beauty offered by our polar regions without worrying about danger or difficulty by visiting some of these amazing locales.

Antarctica

The South Pole is one of the most remote locations in the world. Typically, the realm of scientists and explorers, there has been an increased interest in visiting this region known to be as beautiful as it is stark. Almost everything you can do in Antarctica is done by boat, but an increasing number of companies are journeying to these icy shores.

Often, these expedition style cruises are aboard small ships, where you will be fairly limited in capacity, that means fewer passengers onboard. Sometimes, they will include scientists as well, who are working on projects to help us understand our changing and diverse world.

Iceland

While just south of the Arctic Circle, Iceland sits solidly in what might think to be the polar region. Despite this, it has a surprisingly consistent temperature due to strong ocean currents bringing up warmer water. Iceland is an outdoors type of country, so be ready to hike, bike, or otherwise move about to check out some of the most stunning geological formations on Earth.

It is often called the Land of Ice and Fire, because it boasts massive sweeping glaciers on its peaks and high volcanic activity. Sitting where the tectonic plates are separating, the entire country sits on volcanic rock, and continues to grow to this day, with active volcanoes a regular event. Meanwhile, you want to walk the continental divide in their one national park, Þingvellir (pronounced Thing-vellir). If you love the outdoors, wildlife, and fresh fish, Iceland is one of the best places on Earth to visit.

Arctic Expeditions

While the Antarctic has its expeditions, there is something magical about the Arctic. With no landmass beneath the ice, and polar bears venturing through the frigid waters of the far north, expedition cruises into the Arctic have an austere majesty. Depending on the time of year, the Arctic experiences endless nights or endless days.

One of the greatest sights in the world can only be found in the polar regions is the Aurora Borealis. Known as the Northern Lights, this display is a result of solar winds, and the magnetic poles are an experience that can’t be properly explained and whose photos don’t do them justice. They are one of the best reasons to visit the polar regions.
