Africa

Lemurs, Rhinos, and the Start of Civilization

Africa is a massive continent with more to see and do than anyone could ever experience in their lifetime. The range of cultures, landmarks, histories, and foods is ever growing, and ever changing. From the Sahara Desert to the savannas, the dense jungles, Lake Victoria, the Gold Coast, and more, the landscapes of Africa are stunning and varied in a way unlike anywhere else.

Often when people think of Africa, they think of the animals. Lions, zebra, giraffes, and elephants all spring to mind, and a growing eco-tourism to see and marvel at these amazing creatures has been growing throughout Africa. Cruising has also been an emerging market in this continent, both river and ocean cruising, as a brand-new way to experience Africa.

Morocco

Morocco is a country with a long and storied history. Experience mosques, temples, fortresses, and palaces that cover the cities of Marrakesh and Fez. Experience the wonderful smells of the markets and try some of the world-famous cuisine developed from being a confluence of the Mediterranean, the Atlantic, and the Silk Road.

Visit the dunes of the Sahara and see the sky like you’ve never seen it before. Let out all your stress in a hammam, one of the traditional steam baths of Morocco. If you are feeling adventurous, take a hike up the Atlas Mountains to take in the views that can only be found at the top. Or experience the traditional style of living in a riad, a type of inn famed for its luxury and authenticity.

Madagascar

The country of Madagascar is a place of unique species and fascinating landscapes. Famously, Madagascar is the only place in the world where lemurs live in nature. Madagascar has some of the greatest biodiversity, with lush, beautiful jungles and even the stately baobab tree. If you are interested in adventure and eco-tourism to see animals in their natural environment, Madagascar is a must-visit location because of its truly unique ecosystem.

There’s more to this country than just its animals, however. From breathtaking “Stone Forest” geological formations in the northwest, and its beautiful waterfalls, there is so much of nature to take in and enjoy in this island nation. While you are there, make sure to take in the local cuisine, located on the sea near Ethiopia and India, the blending of spices, flavors, and preparations make for an outstanding eating experience.

Safaris

To experience the wildlife of Africa, there is nothing quite like a safari. Probably one of the things that Africa is most famous for, the safari is an exciting way to see some of the world’s most beloved animals in their natural habitat. Often safaris are run by the preserves and use that money to continue to protect these fragile ecosystems from poachers and environmental changes.

You’ll find most of the safaris in South Africa, where they have done the most to protect their savannah environments. One thing you might not think of to see for wildlife in South Africa are the famous great white sharks that swim off the southern coast. This is one of the only places in the world where the sharks will propel themselves up into the air to catch the seals that frequent these waters in a display like no other.
